The organisers have cancelled the 2015 TWFG Insurance Services Gran Fondo: Texas TMCO, scheduled for March 29, due to problems confirming a suitable route.

All registration fees for the Houston-area event, a recommended ride for the BP MS150, will be refunded within two weeks according to the registration website.

"The primary consideration of any bicycle ride is the safety of the participant riders," said the organisers in a statement. "After an exhaustive effort to find safe routes in the area surrounding The Woodlands, Texas, it was the determination of the Steering Committee, a group with collectively over 200 years of cycling experience, that roads offered and approved by various governmental agencies would not meet the safety standards of the Steering Committee."

There had been reports of issues with permits from local officials for the ride which was planned to pass through Montgomery and Walker counties along Northern Montgomery county and Sam Houston National Park.

Based at Lone Star College in Conroe, TX, 100, 65 and 40 mile courses had been planned. The routes -- new for 2015 -- were planned to run north on SR 242, west on SR 1488, and then north. The long route was then north of Lake Conroe and the shorter routes to the south of the lake.

The steering committee has already started planning the 2016 event, according to the website.
