Are you are looking for a cycling challenge, a great ride with friends and an opportunity to kick back afterward to swap stories? Well, we have the ride for you.

Raid Rockingham combines elements of the area’s best roads on a supported course, with a great party awaiting you at the finish. There will be Smuttynose beer on tap and some tasty grub to match. We’ll even throw in some awesome swag and prizes…….because that’s how we roll.

Raid – Our definition? A raid is a challenging route that includes a significant amount of packed-gravel riding and at least one major climbing segment. Some would call it a dirt road randonee, others a gravel grinder, we just call it a Raid.

This is not a race. A properly prepared rider and bike of most any type can do this. Our guarantee – you will finish tired but feeling accomplished. It’s probably not for everybody, but you’re not everybody, right?

This Raid – Raid Rockingham features a 100K (approx. 60 Miles) route that includes about 25 miles packed gravel roads and only  two  Category 5 climbs (average over 3% grade on a segment of  at least 500 meters). That’s easy enough, eh? We will also offer a bail-out option using the inaugural event’s 45-mile route…..just in case it’s not your day!

Which Bike?

There are many steeds you may choose to successfully complete the Raid; your key concern is to make sure you have the appropriate gearing to address the climbs. Beyond that, you want to be on a bike that is ride-ready and prepared for both asphalt and packed gravel riding, some tips:

  • Road Bike –You would want 25mm or wider tires (28’s are best, rough service types – Armadillos, Gatorbacks, etc. – are not a bad idea). We have ridden this course on a road bike and can assure you that this would be an excellent option. Really.
  • Cyclocross Bike– Out of the crate, just hop on and ride. Have you been thinking of buying a ‘cross bike? Well, here’s your excuse!  ‘Nuff said.
  • Mountain Bike– Seriously, don’t do it. We love mountain bikes and there are all sorts of things you can do to make them perform better on the road. Better is a relative term though, they’re still inherently slow on asphalt. If you’re cool with slow then we are too. But it’ll be a long day in the saddle and you might miss the party.
