No 2018 event.
To the Victoria Gran Fondo Doppio community,
Many of you are aware that we were considering a route change as a result of the Great Trail connection between Shawnigan and Westshore. The Malahat has always been a concern and given an alternative it seemed obvious to take advantage. After numerous passes over this connection it is clear that it is not appropriate for the Doppio. Simply put, it's too steep and narrow to be used at the tail end of a 260km event.
The Doppio was born out of passion for big rides and the scenic South Island terrain. The evolution of the event stayed true to those beginnings while trying to open the experience to a broader group. An epic ride that so many who hesitantly started became amazed at completing with dignity. This was only made possible because of the energetic support of dozens of volunteers and critical resources supplied by generous sponsors. I'm tremendously grateful to all those who have contributed and trust they enjoyed their role as much as I enjoyed their contribution.
We will take a rest in 2018. The passion remains and a new Doppio will come. The standards we have set will be honoured so when you catch word of the Doppio being resurrected, rest assured it will be a special event worth burning 6000 calories for.
A great day cycling Southern Vancouver Island in the style of the classic European gran fondos.
Whether you are looking to complete your first 200+k day or looking to achieve a new best time, our goal is to make your day a cycling crowning achievement.
We provide an unrivalled experience of cycling, food and beverage. Experienced motorcycle and vehicle escort for the entire ride in order to insure safety and support.
In order to deliver the level of support we feel is required we are limiting the field to 100 riders.
Please be sure to register early, we would love you to be there.
A large part of this ride is on roads that are quite remote. These roads are subject to frost heave and road-side bank erosion. Also keep an eye out for bears and deer from Sooke to at least Lake Cowichan.
Based on the assumption they you are an enthusiast who knows how to prepare for a 120 -150km ride you don’t need to do anything much different for this. This ride is hilly and involves a mix of shorter steep hill and longer gentler climbs. For the record there are a couple long steeps as well, but the point is to prep your climbing legs.
After the epic ride, beer and barbecue for riders, family and friends will be hosted again at Lighthouse Brewery. Massage, food and refreshments are complimentary for participants and intended to make the transition from a day on the bike to life out of the saddle as perfect as possible.
Although only a couple kms from the Harbour Towers Hotel & Suites, we will have shuttle vans running continuously to provide you and your bike transport back to the start point.
